What is matcha?

Matcha is a type of green tea made from young tea leaves that are ground into a fine powder.

The specially cultivated tea leaves are kept in the shade for 3-4 weeks before harvest to promote the growth of amino acids, chlorophyll, and antioxidants.

With regular green tea, the leaves are steeped in water and then removed. Drinking brewed green tea is like boiling spinach, throwing away the spinach, and only drinking the water. While you do get some of the nutrients, the best part is thrown away. With matcha, you consume the whole tea leaves.

What are the benefits of matcha?

Like other green teas, matcha contains a type of antioxidant called catechins. Matcha is rich in a catechin called EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate), which is believed to have anti-cancer effects on the body. Studies have linked green tea to a variety of health benefits, such as the prevention of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and cancer, and even the promotion of weight loss. However, it is important to note that much of this research does not come from clinical trials showing that green tea causes a benefit. Instead, most of it comes from population-based studies in which researchers look at groups of people who drink green tea and compare their health outcomes with groups that do not. Studies have shown associations between tea and better health, but causality has not yet been proven.

Nevertheless, there have been some interesting findings. A 2014 study examined 25 randomized controlled trials on the link between tea and blood pressure and reported that the blood pressure of people who drank tea—specifically green tea—for 12 weeks dropped significantly. A 2011 study reports that green tea consumption seems to be associated with lower levels of bad LDL cholesterol, but more research is needed.

What does matcha taste like?

Matcha tastes like an earthy, creamy type of green tea, with less bitterness and more umami flavor.

Since many are still discovering the taste, matcha is often sweetened, mixed with milk, and complemented with chai, vanilla, or cinnamon.
